Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background:

Ovarian tumors are common forms of neoplasia in women. They are amazingly diverse pathologic entities. This diversity is attributed to the three cell types that make up the normal ovary that include epithelial cells, germ cells and sex cord-stromal cells. Ovarian cancer represents 6% of all cancers and the 5th leading cause of cancer death in women. Objectives: To determine the types and percentage of ovarian tumors in the western Iraq and to give an initial data base for further studies that deal with this wide world increasing tumors.  Methods: Seven hundred thirty nine cases of cystectomy/oophorectomy specimens were collected from the major hospitals (including private ones) in western Iraq over a period extended from January 2006 to January 2011. Age of the patients and the size of specimens were recorded, at least three tissue pieces from each specimen were submitted for histopathological study by conventional hematoxylin and eosin stain. Results:  Among 739 cystectomy/oophorectomy specimens the neoplastic tumors were 471 cases representing 63.7%. The types of these tumors included: Epithelial tumor: 303 cases (64.3%), Germ cell tumors: 158 cases (33.5%), Sex cord stromal tumors: 6 cases (1.27%) and metastatic non ovarian tumor: 3 cases (0.64%). Malignant tumors were 31 cases (6.6 % of all ovarian tumors), distributed according to the types as: Epithelial 22 cases (71%), Germ cell tumors 4 cases (12.9%), Sex cord-stromal tumors  2 cases (6.5%) and metastatic non ovarian tumor 3 cases (9.7%). Conclusion: This study suggests some differences in the distribution of some tumors in this region that may need a full explanation by further studies.
