Abstract

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor and matrix metalloproteinase-2 have been implicated in various forms of human cancers and serve as prognostic markers, several phenomena are responsible for abnormal activation of these markers in patients with transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder.

Objective: To evaluate the possible role of EGFR and MMP-2 in patients with transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder

Methods: Formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissues from 25 patients with transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder from specialized surgical hospital in Baghdad were included in this study. In addition, 25 apparently normal bladder biopsies were used as control group. Tissue blocks were sectioned for the detection of EGFR by immunohistochemistry and MMP-2 by in situ hybridization.

Results: The expression of EGFR and MMP-2 in transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder tissues in the present study was 68% (17 out of 25) and  56% (14 out of 25) respectively, where strong correlation was found between expression of EGFR and MMP2 and transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder

Conclusion: Epidermal growth factor receptor and matrix metalloproteinase-2 might have an important role in the course of transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder.
