Prophylactic Antibiotic Use in Clean, Uncontaminated Neck Dissection in Thyroid Surgery
Abstract
ABSTRACTBackground: Goitre refers to an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Goitre can result from diseases of thyroid gland and number of other causes. Enlarged thyroid is treated depending on the cause. Surgery to remove the goiter is performed in case of cancer or nodules. The infection may occur as one of the complications of the surgery.
Objectives: To determine the role of infection as a complication of thyroid surgery in clean, uncontaminated neck dissection in thyroid surgery.
Methods: Fifty two adult patients male and female with different types of goiter and thyroid nodule included in this study were admitted in Al-Nahrain Teaching hospital in Baghdad/Iraq from January 2004 to January 2005.
Results: The incidence of infection in patients with antibiotic cover was (3.8%) and it was different from those patients without any antibiotic prophylaxis (11%). Patients with and without antibiotic cover showed a growth of Staphylococcal microorganism.
Conclusions: Severe wound infection has not been seen in this method in those with or without antibiotic as prophylaxis. There is a clear evidence of decreased wound infection in those patients who received pre-operative antibiotic than those without antibiotic prophylaxis.
