Clinical and Pathological Features of Breast Cancer in Al-Diawania

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in both Arab women and Western women. Although the incidence of breast cancer is lower in Al-Diawania vicinity, it is diagnosed in younger age and seems to have worse prognosis.

Objectives: To demonstrate the clinical presentations of our patients and pathological features compared to Western patients.

Methods: The files of 161 patients with breast cancer treated at Al-Diawania Teaching hospital between 2007 and 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. Type of breast operation and both clinical and all pathological finding of patients were summarized and correlated to the ethnicity of women

Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 47.6 years, the left sided breasts were affected more than the right breasts 59.6% and most common quadrant involved was upper outer quadrant 53.4%. The most common pathological features were grade III comprised 76.1% and hormonal receptors were positive in 66 %

Conclusions: The study’s data demonstrate younger age and more advanced tumor at diagnosis and all pathological figures were more aggressive in present study compared to Western women.
