Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Conversion Rate and Its Causes in Fallujah Hospital, Anbar, Iraq
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard for the treatment of symptomatic gall stone all over the world. It's safe operation with acceptable conversion rate and complications.
Objective: To determine the conversion rate of laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open cholecystectomy and its causes in Fallujah hospital, Anbar, Iraq
Methods: A prospective study carried out in Fallujah hospital from 14th of December 2009 to 31st of March 2011 on (308) patients with symptomatic gall stone. All patients who were scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic gall stones were included in the study those with acute cholecystitis excluded from the study.
Results: A total of 308 patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy during the study period, the conversion rate was (7.14 %) and the commonest cause was dense adhesion around gall bladder due to inflammations making dissection unsafe.
Conclusion: laparoscopic cholecystectomy was a safe operation for treatment of symptomatic gall stones with acceptable conversion rate and the commonest cause for conversion was dense adhesion around gall bladder due to inflammations making dissection unsafe.
