Laparoscopic Adhesiolysis for Chronic Abdominal Pain
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background:
Abdominal pain secondary to adhesions is relatively common complaint. A minimally invasive procedure (laparoscopic adhesiolysis) might improve the outcome by inflicting less surgical trauma, laparoscopic adhesiolysis leads to substantial pain relief and improvement in quality of life in patients with chronic abdominal pain secondary to adhesions.
Objectives:
To test whether the laparoscopic adhesiolysis leads to substantial pain relief and improvement in quality of life in patients with chronic abdominal pain secondary to adhesions.
Methods:
Between January 2009 and January 2012, 35 patients with post-operative chronic abdominal pain were admitted to the surgical ward at Al-Mosul General Hospital and were subjected to diagnostic laparoscopy and adhesiolysis. Data were collected and analyzed
Results:
Appendectomy was found to be the most common cause of post-operative adhesive bands. Abdominal pain with feature of sub-acute intestinal obstruction appears to be the most common presenting feature. The rate was more common in age group 3040 years. Post-operative results in disappearance of abdominal pain and gastrointestinal stability.
Conclusion:
A minimally invasive procedure (laparoscopic adhesiolysis) is superior to conventional adhesiolysis by laparotomy, inflicting less surgical trauma. This technique needs skilled laparoscopic surgeon with availability of instruments.
