Epidemiology of Low Back Pain among Taxi Drivers

Abstract

ABSTRACT 

Background: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders, especially low back pain, cause substantial economic losses to individuals as well as to the community. Professional taxi drivers have been found to be at high risk for developing low back pain due to prolonged sitting and vehicle vibration.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of low back pain among taxi drivers in Baquba city, Iraq.

Methods:  This study was conducted among taxi car drivers from March to October 2010 in Baquba city. Questionnaires were used to determine the prevalence of low back pain among 250 taxi car drivers

Results: A high prevalence of low back pain among taxi drivers was found. Age ≥ 25 years was found to be more risk as compared to < 25 years. The duration of work >10 years was found to be more risk as compared to ≤10 years of work. Smokers were found to have significant higher risk for development of low back pain than non-smokers. 

Conclusion: The high prevalence low back pain among taxi drivers was associated with long driving time, age and smoking
