Outcome of Induction Phase Treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at Child’s Central Teaching Hospital, Baghdad

ABSTRACT
Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common malignancy in children. It accounts for one-fourth of all childhood cancers and 72% of all cases of childhood leukemia. Induction phase and achievement of complete remission is an important initial step for future cure.
Objectives: To compare the results of induction phase between standard and high risk groups.
Methods: This study includes 159 children with newly diagnosed ALL below the age of 15 years between April 1, 2008 to December 31, 2011. Patients were treated with modified protocols from United Kingdom Medical Research Council Working Party on Childhood Leukaemia (MRC-UKALL 2003), outcome of induction phase were analyzed.
Results: Patients with age group (1-9 year) represents the majority (77.3%) of cases with male to female ratio of 1.4:1.patients with initial leukocyte count of > 50 x109 L were 54 (22.6%). ALL- L2 morphology was seen in 176(73.9%) cases. Most of treated children were of standard risk group 97 (61%) who were achieve complete remission (92.9%).
Conclusion: Survival of high risk patients during induction phase is significantly less than standard risk patients treated by United Kingdom Medical Research Council Working Party on Childhood Leukaemia (MRC-UKALL 2003) protocol.
