Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Blood lipid concentrations in the plasma increase significantly during pregnancy. It has been suggested that the increase in plasma triglycerides and LDL during pregnancy might be used to identify women who will develop cardiovascular disease later in life.

Objective: To evaluate lipid profile and albumin in healthy pregnant grand- grand multi paras women and to compare them with healthy pregnant women who had delivered two or less.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was done at Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for a period of twelve months from the first of May 2009 to the end of April 2010. The study included a total of hundred women, divided into two groups, group A (study group) included fifty pregnant women who delivered seven or more children (grand-grand multi paras) and group B control group included fifty pregnant women who had delivered up to twice. The women in both groups attended the outpatient clinic were matched for maternal age, gestational age and had normal singleton pregnancies. All subjects were scheduled to undergo blood test after overnight fasting and subjected to the following investigations (blood lipids and albumen).

Results: The mean cholesterol level of the grand-grand multi paras pregnant women was 5.51 (mmol/l) which was statistically not significant. The mean HDL level of the grandgrand multi paras pregnant women was 1.4 (mmol/l) also was statistically not significant. The mean triglyceride level was 2.13 (mmol/l) compared to the mean triglyceride level of the low parity women was 2.77 (mmol/l) and it was statistically not significant. The mean albumin level of the grand-grand multi paras pregnant women was 33.67 (g/l) compared to the mean albumin level of the low parity women was 33.59 (g/l) which also, was statistically not significant.

Conclusion:  There was no difference in lipid profile and albumin level between grandgrand multiparas women during pregnancy and those who delivered two or less
