Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Infertility is a severely distressing experience for many women. Depression is considered as one of the main psychological disorders associated with infertility and it may significantly affect the life of infertile women, their treatment, and follow-up.

Objective: To determine the rate and predisposing factors of depression among the infertile women in our society

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed between November 2011 and April 2012. The target population was comprised of 225 infertile women, with age of 17-45 years. They were attending the infertility unit of two large hospitals in Baghdad. Data collection has been done by an interview using a questionnaire form based on the diagnostic criteria of depression which had been taken from the international classification of diseases, the tenth revision

Results: The rate of depression was 66.2%. There was no significant difference in the rate of depression among patients' age, occupation and educational level. Depression was significantly higher among those with primary infertility. It had been significantly found that the depression rate was inversely correlated to the duration of infertility.

Conclusion: The level of depression was higher among infertile women in our society compared to that recorded in other countries. Therefore, it may be desirable to establish psychological and psychiatric services in infertility treatment clinics.
