Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Testicular tumors are uncommon, being of low incidence in African and Asian countries, higher in European countries.

Objective: To assess testicular tumors in Iraq regarding incidence, age distribution and histopathological typing

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted over a period of 12 years (1985-1996). Cases were collected from the Iraqi cancer registry, and private and public laboratories. A total of 460 cases were registered. The slides were reviewed for histopathological typing according to WHO classification.

Results: The right testis was affected slightly more than the left with a ratio of 1.1:1. Age incidence showed a peak in the 3rd and 4th decades and a smaller peak in early childhood. Bilateral testicular tumors were encountered in 1.1% of cases. Germ cell tumors were the most common histological type (83.4%), pure in (68.9%) and mixed in (14.5%). Seminoma was the single most common germ cell tumor (45%). Non-seminomatous germ cell tumors accounted for 23.9% of cases. Of mixed germ cell tumors, the most common combination was embryonal carcinoma and teratoma (teratocarcinoma), accounting for 9.9% of cases. All other tumor types were rare.

Conclusion: Testicular tumors were uncommon in Iraq. Young adults and young children were mainly affected.
