Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Reconstruction of extensive bone defects remains technically challenging
and has considerable medical and financial impact on our society. Surgical procedures
often require a bone substitute graft to enhance and accelerate bone repair.
Objective: To determine the efficacy of resorbable β TCP (RTR Syringa, Septodont,
Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, France) bone graft material, in reconstruction of bone defects
after apicectomy and surgical removal of impacted teeth and other surgical defects.
Methods: Thirty five patients requiring apicectomy and surgical removal of impacted teeth
were included in the study. The surgical procedures were done and the bone defects were
filled with bone graft material.
Results: The resorbable β TCP placed in the bone defects at the time of surgical
operations was well tolerated in all sites. Clinical examination showed no incidence of
postoperative infection, allergy or graft rejection. The size of the bony defects was
reduced. Histopathological examination of the biopsy specimen showed evidence of new
bone formation and radiographical radio-density of regenerated bone. The result of the
statistical analysis showed that the highest healing percentage was 60%-70% in younger
age 25-35 age group.
Conclusion: The resorb β TCP graft material placed at the time of surgical procedure for
filling the bony defects is a predictable method for regeneration of the surgical bone
defects.
