Incidence of Gallstones in Diabetic Patients
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Gallstone disease is a common gastrointestinal disorder throughout the world. Most studies on association between GS formation and DM have focused on type 2 diabetics.
Objective: To determine the association of diabetes mellitus with incidence of GS formation.
Methods: A prospective study was carried in Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital, between December 2011 and August 2014, 115 diabetic patients were included in the study. The patients’ conditions were studied by history taking and ultrasound examination to know the incidence of gallstone in diabetic patients.
Results: There was 19(16.5%) out of 115 diabetic patients were having gallstone with mean age was 52.56±11.7 years, male to female ratio was 1:1.7. The incidence of GS increases in diabetic patients with long duration of DM and slightly increases in those with hyperlipidemia.
Conclusion: The incidence of GS formation in diabetic patients was slightly higher than in general population, but with no statistical significant. Females were affected more than males. Age, overweight, hyperlipidemia and duration of DM were considered as risk factors.
