Lipid Profile in Obese Children
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Evidence has shown that early lesion of coronary atherosclerosis can occur
in children and adolescents in association with obesity.
Objective: To study the plasma lipid profile in obese children.
Methods: A case-control study of 50 obese children and 50 healthy children for the period
between 1st of March 2012 to 15th of December 2012, they were divided into 3 groups:
group 1: below 5 years. Group 2: 5 -10 years group 3: above 10 years. Measurements of
total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride level and LDL-cholesterol were done for the
studied cases and the control children.
Results: Total cholesterol has shown no significant difference between obese patients
and control children at various age groups (p value > 0.05). Triglycerides are significantly
higher in obese female groups (1 and 2). (p value <0.05). HDL-cholesterol has shown a
decrease in obese children but of no significant difference, and LDL-cholesterol has
shown significant increase in obese male of all age groups (1, 2 and 3), (p value < 0.05).
Conclusion: Lipid profile in obese children is different from the normal children. The
triglyceride is significantly increased in obese females and the LDL-cholesterol the
(atherogenic factor) has significant increase in obese male.
