Mycological Study of Wound Infections among Iraqi Patients in Baghdad City
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Wound infections have always been major complications of trauma and
surgery. Infection complications were a major cause of morbidity and mortality in serious
burn patients in Baghdad hospitals. An increasing number of wound infections are now
due to fungi, fungal wound infections was associated with increased mortality.
Objective: To isolate and identify the fungal elements from wound infection, and detect
the fungal sensitivity toward group of antifungal drugs to determine the best treatment to
be given.
Methods: Two hundred and fifty swabs were collected from patients admitted to different
Baghdad hospitals, during the period from November 2011 till October 2012 using
Sabouraud Media to be confirmed by RapID Yeast Plus and Vitek 2 Compact systems.
Results: The most predominant fungal isolates was Candida spp. 89 isolates (49.1%)
followed by Cryptococcus spp. 33 isolates (18.2%) and Aspergillus spp. 16 isolates
(8.8%).
Conclusion: This study showed that fungal infection represent high percentage (66.8%)
of total wound infection.
