Incidence of Top Ten Causes of Intrauterine Fetal Death in Iraq between 2008-2011
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Worldwide an estimate of at least 2.6 million stillbirths occurs each year, with more than 8200 deaths a day. The majority of these deaths occur in developing countries. Two third of still births occurred in South East Asia and Africa and 55% occurred in rural families from these area.
Objectives: To find out the incidence of the most common ten causes of intrauterine fetal death in Iraq population during the period from 2008-2011 and to compare that with other countries.
Methods: Descriptive cross sectional study of intrauterine fetal death records of Ministry of Health in Iraq which entered into computerized software with statistical facility, version 18, for windows was used. Descriptive statistics were presented as frequency distribution with percentage (%), then the incidence of intrauterine fetal death was calculated, and cause specific incidence rate was calculated.
Results: According to the data of Ministry of Health in Iraq, there is an annual variation in the incidence of intrauterine fetal death during the period of four years (2008-2011) but there is no statistical significance in incidence of causes of intrauterine fetal death during this period.
Conclusions: The incidence of intrauterine fetal deaths in Iraq during the period (20082011) was relatively high compared to other countries; the highest reported incidence was in 2009 and significantly declined in 2011. Placental causes were on the top of the list of all causes represented more than half of the etiological factors of intrauterine fetal deaths.
