The Role of Maternal Serum Levels of Adiponectin in Pre-eclamptic Women
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Adiponectine is a 244 amino acid which has profound insulin-sensitizing,
anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic effects. However, reports of the role of
adiponectine in pre-eclampsia are conflicting.
Objective: To evaluate the serum adiponectine levels in pre-eclamptic women.
Methods: A case-control study performed in Al-Yarmouk teaching hospital and included a
sample of 65 pregnant women with singleton, live fetus in the third trimester. They were
divided into 3 groups: 30 women with healthy uncomplicated pregnancy, 20 women with
mild pre-eclampsia and 15 with severe pre-eclampsia. The serum levels of adiponectine
were assessed for all groups using ELISA methods.
Results: The mean serum adiponectin level was 10.86±2.64 in the pregnant women with
healthy uncomplicated pregnancy while it was 15.52±2.52 in mild pre-eclampsia, while in
severe pre-eclampsia have serum adiponectin level (23.87±4.18) which was significant
higher from control group also significantly higher from mild pre-eclampsia with significant
difference in P-value.
Conclusion: Adiponectine could markedly increased in cases of pre-eclampsia,
especially in severe cases and have a negative correlation between adiponectine levels,
blood pressure and body mass index.
