Comparative Study between Endoscopic Myringoplasty and Conventional Method (Underlay Technique)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Myringoplasty is conducted under the operating microscope until
nowadays, but has its limitations, with the introduction of the endoscope into other
branches of surgery; there have been attempts at its utilization in otology. Very few
studies have been done previously in which endoscopes were used in ear surgery, so this
study was conducted in which endoscopes were used to perform myringoplasty.
Objective(s): To compare the results of endoscopic myringoplasty with those of
conventional myringoplasty using microscope and to evaluate the role of rigid endoscopes
in the management of dry central perforation of the tympanic membrane.
Methods: Between April 2014 and December 2014, 48 patients with dry central
perforation underwent myringoplasty, 24 were endoscopic assisted and 24 were
microscopic assisted. Results of surgery compared at the end of three months post
operation regarding both graft take and hearing gain.
Results: There was no statistical difference between both endoscopic and microscopic
assisted myringoplasty 91.67%, 87.5%, respectively, whereas the hearing gain
10.66±3.16 dB, 11.50±3.98 dB, respectively.
Conclusion: Endoscopic myringoplasty is an effective complementary alternative to
microscopic myringoplasty, results in excellent hearing outcome and graft uptake in small
and medium size central perforations.
