Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Matrix metalloproteinases-7 (MMP-7) is a small secreted proteolytic
enzyme with broad substrate specificity against extracellular matrix (ECM) and non-ECM
components.
Objective: To investigate and compare the expression of MMP-7 in different grades of
human breast cancer tissues and fibroadenoma breast tissues.
Methods: A total of 83 patients with breast cancer (53 malignant and 30 benign) were
included in this study. The samples were analyzed the expression of MMP-7 mRNA using
in situ hybridization technique.
Results: Overexpression of MMP-7 was detected in 60.37% of (> 40% of the cells
appearing as positive) and 39.62% expression of (11- 40% of the cells appearing as
positive) in breast cancer tissues, values for MMP-7 were significantly higher in malignant
tumor than those in benign tumor p<0.01). MMP-7 mRNA expression increased
significantly in grade III compared with grade II patients.
Conclusion: MMP-7 might thus be associated with breast cancer development and tumor
progression. And may represent helpful adjuncts to conventional diagnostic tools in
malignancy as probable diagnosis.
