Thyroid Gland Diseases in Baghdadians

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: No previous post-mortem Iraqi study had focused on thyroid gland diseases and their relation with the causes of death from the medico-legal point of view.

Objectives: To know the prevalence of thyroid gland diseases in Baghdadians, their relation with age, sex, and the cause of death from medico-legal point of view. In addition to show the important role of forensic medicine in different medical researches.

Methods: One hundred and twenty two cadavers were chosen by simple random sampling during the period from 1-10-2001 to 31-3 2002. A complete autopsy was done including macroscopical and microscopical examination of the thyroid gland to reach the aims mentioned above.

Results: Goiter was present macroscopically in 18% of cases, while goiterous changes were present histologically in 56.6% and both were more in females. Benign and malignant tumors were rare. A direct relation between thyroid gland state and the cause of death was present in 1.6% of cases.

Conclusions: Goiter could be regarded as endemic condition in Baghdad. Thyroid gland diseases are more in females and have weak relation with the direct cause of death from the medico-legal point of view.
