Abstract
ABSTRACTBackground: Leukocytes are the major component of inflammation and immune response. A quantitative measurement of any change in their number can provide an insight into the pathophysiological significance of the leukocytes variations in the disease process.
Objectives: In the aim of studying the association of different leukocytes count in different clinical presentation of acute ischemic strokes, this paper is designed.
Methods: One hundred thirty (130) consecutive patients, who had the first complete cerebral infarction, were collected at the emergency ward, and exposed to blood sampling immediately. The samples were tested at the side laboratory for total leukocytes (white blood cells-WBCs) count. The severity of the clinical neurological deficit at onset was grouped into severe, moderate, mild and others as unclassified. Results: It was found that the higher leukocytes count at the onset of the insult or at the time of presentation was correlated with the more severe clinical neurological impairment (P<0.0001).Conclusion: This direct relationship between leukocytes count and the severity of acute ischemic stroke will support the presumed inflammatory role of white blood cells in these chronic non infective diseases as well as the increase in the initial WBCs count, might reflect the extent of brain damage and its consequences in terms of morbidity in the absence of the effects of other factors that may play a role in WBCs count increment such as infections, drugs and hemorrhage, and this fact is agreed upon by other studies.
