The Effect of Blood Storage on Certain Biochemical Parameters
The Effect of Blood Storage on Certain Biochemical Parameters
Abstract
ABSTRACTBackground: When blood is stored outside the body some biochemical changes will take place resulting in reduced blood cells survival which is an important drawback when transferred to patients.
Objectives: This study was done to determine the effect of blood storage on some of its biochemical parameters namely glucose, iron and total iron binding Capacity (TIBC).
Methods: Fifty blood donors, who attended the Central Blood Bank, Al-Zahrawi Hospital- Mosul, from 1st of October 2002 to 31st of March 2003, were included in this study. The recommended quantity of blood was obtained from each and added to a special blood bag containing adenine citrate phosphate-dextrose (CPD-A1) solution. A blood sample consisting of 50 ml was taken from each bag and divided into 7 portions. One of these portions was analyzed immediately being the control sample (at zero time). The other six portions were kept in the blood bank refrigerator were to be analyzed later on, at  intervals of 3 days 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 weeks.
Results: At zero time, the mean plasma glucose was high. At the 3rd day it showed a significant decrease in both sexes, continuing gradually and more significantly till the 5th week. Plasma iron showed no significant change until the 1st week in males and the 2nd week in females. Both continued to increase gradually and more significantly till the 5th weeks. The TIBC level showed no significant change until the 3rd week where it started to decrease significantly till the 5th storage week.
Conclusion: It is better to give patients fresh blood within 7 days of it’s storage as blood undergoes unavoidable biochemical changes leading to a decrease in hemoglobin and the viable red blood cells.
Key words: Blood, Storage, Glucose, TIBC, Iron.
