The Safety of Adenoidectomy and Adenotonsillectomy in Children under Three Years of Age
Abstract
ABSTRACTBackground: Adenoidectomy and adenotonsillectomy could carry many complications in children under three years of age.
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety of adenoidectomy and adenotonsillectomy in children under three years of age.
Methods: In a prospective study, fifty patients, under three years age, were admitted to Al-Ramadi General Hospital during the period from September 2000 - August 2003, who had suffered from obstructive sleep problems (72%) and recurrent attacks of upper respiratory tract infections (28%) due to tonsillar and adenoids infections and hypertrophy. All the patients underwent adenoidectomy (23) and adenotonsillectomy (27) under general anesthesia.
Follow up continued post operatively for a period of six months.
Results: The most common post-operative complication was respiratory (6 patients), manifested as chest infection and intraoperative cyanosis. Other complications encountered were recurrence of symptoms (2 patients) and hypernasality (one patient). No hemorrhage or dehydration was recorded in the current study.Â
Conclusion: Adenoidectomy and adenotonsillectomy could be safe procedures in children under three years of age.
